Internet as a tool: getting data, finding info, converting into knowledge

This is the environnment in wich you gonna evolve:
content without much form. Billion of webpages (text, image). Millions of forum (text). New technologies every year.
New technical network for new social network. Collective intelligence, social networking, community of practices...

Concept: metadata is the key to organization, to put a form on the content.

Technologies: only the best, found in 2005, after 10 years of surfing the web, comparing ideas and concepts.

You should have good tools to bring out the most of it: use key technologies and your common sense !

Key:
offline:
only on your computer
online: available to everybody, shared on the net.
+i: interesting
++i: very interesting

Books: print.google.com

Search in what still constitutes 70% of human textual knowledge: BOOKS !
You can read a few pages of the book and buy it online or at a local bookstore.

See what Google Print pages look like on our Google Print Screenshots page.

What is the goal of Google Print for Libraries?
This project's aim is simple: make it easier to find relevant books. We hope to guide more users to books - specifically books they might not be able to find any other way - all while carefully respecting authors' and publishers' copyrights. Our ultimate goal is to work with publishers and libraries to create a comprehensive, searchable, virtual card catalog of all books in all languages that helps users discover new books and publishers find new readers.

We scan the full text of your book because we want people to be able to search all its content. But users can only access a limited portion of any given book each month. They can also only browse two pages backward and forward from any page where their search term appeared.

Browser:
Put content and form together. Control the way you surf the web !

  • Technology: use Mozilla or Firefox. Tabs instead of many windows, no popups, easy plugins installation, quick search in google and dictionnaries, mouse gestures..

Blogs: content

  • Time: 2004, 2005

  • keywords, similar concepts: personal webpage, online journal

  • Concept: be heard, become famous, publish easily, quantity rather than quality, everyday, frequency counts more than content, play with nice technology

  • Resume: the most popular concept in 2004-05, thanks to the technology enabling people to rapidly publish on the web. Many words for nothing, a lot of waste, but a few good blogs from people who particularly know their field and really have something to say about it (scientifics, fans, thinkers, artists...).

  • Exemple: IT blogs, warblogs by soldiers in Irak

  • Bad aspects: nothing about everything, know everything about Mary's dog, Peter dreams, Lukas friends, Romain grandmother...

  • Technology: you must have a host, a installed script manages content (CMS), especially under its blog form, a way to easy publish info on it (offline, online, both).
    Most famous technologies:
    stand-alone: MoveableType, Druppal
System with hosting (alltogether): Blogger, LiveJournal

Bookmarks (links, URL):
when form becomes content

  • Technologies:
offline: builtin into the browser. PowerMarks is the best offline software, you can put metadata to your bookmarks and organize them in many different ways: hierarchical (usual), horizontal, after keywords, it has an internal search engine.
    online: del.icio.us

RSS feeds (news feeds): news about content

  • Concept: You subscribe to a news channel and get news automatically. It's a passive way of getting info. If the website post an icon like these oneRSS Click for Javascript code to include this list in any webpageATOM feed for this list according to the current criteriaRSS feed for this list according to the current criteria , it publish info in RSS feeds.
Instead of just adding a RSS feed, you can also add an entire category (with ou w/O its child) of a directory like syndic8.com.

  • keywords, similar concepts: news feeds (old news), newsletter (by email), push technology (wasn't popular)

  • Standards: RSS, Atom, XML. (Categories: OCS, OPML)

  • Ressource: directory of RSS feeds, most popular
    Technorati, Feedster, Syndic8.com
    http://allrss.com/index.html
    http://allrss.com/rssdirectories.html

  • Technology: a web site publish a RSS feed. This feed has an URL. You need a feed reader. It can either be offline (most of the case) or online. Put that URL into your reader.
    List of readers: http://allrss.com/rssreaders.html

  • The best: Firefox with Sage extension. Sage use simple bookmarks as feeds URL. It generates a web page with the content of the feeds.
Firefox uses Live Bookmarks: you see a RSS icon in the right bottom of the windows with and you can directly add it to your bookmarks.

Manage the web
Concept: manage the info you find on the net from everywhere: save info, manage bookmarks, publish content
